Optional Life insurance allows employers to control costs by providing a base level of coverage to their employees then giving them the option to purchase additional coverage to supplement the life insurance coverage provided by their benefit plan.

Optional Life coverage is available to employees and their spouses.  Since a higher risk is involved, medical evidence is required for optional coverage amounts.  Optional Life insurance rates are usually based on age bands, gender and smoking status.
